Tips for Your Property From Still Waters Grounds
Maintenance
When is the best time to treat for
Grubs?
White grubs comprise several different species of beetles but generally are
controlled the same way. The damage is caused by the larval stage of
the insect's life when it chews on the root structure of grass plants just
below the surface. This larval stage is present twice throughout the growing
season. First, the insect over winters deep in the soil and works its way
to the surface as temperatures rise in the Spring. They begin feeding at this
point for several weeks before pupating into the adult beetle stage.
Most beetles will continue to do some damage to ornamental plants during this
time. After several weeks in the adult form, the insects mate and lay
eggs just beneath the soil surface. After a short period, the new larvae emerge
and begin feeding once again (mid-late August). This is the time when the
insects are at their most immature and vulnerable point. Although the available
control products vary in their mode of action, this is generally the most
effective time to control a white grub population.
